We are currently writing and editing our conceptual piece on a redefined and refined meaning of 1:1 computing.
1:1 computing redefined

As we collect our data and analyze it, we are beginning to realize how narrow our understanding of 1:1 computing was.
Our project initially wanted to examine how teacher trainees here in NIE used the laptop computers that were given to them during their stay here. But we realize now that they use other mobile computing devices (MCDs), like mobile phones or netbooks, in addition to the laptops.
So we should NOT be playing the numbers game as far as 1:1 computing is concered. 1:1 computing isn’t just the adminstrative or bureaucratic manner of providing users with one laptop each. Instead, we should be looking at how users connect with one another or online resources. In other words, we should be looking at how they learn, with what they choose to learn with, and why.

We’ve had to opportunity to collect data via user journals and focus groups on how preservice teachers used mobile computing devices during term time and during the vacation period.
Next step: How their usage might differ during their practicum.

We had to prepare a report just months into the first year of our research project. Give us some time to get some momentum, please!
